Q1: better late than never

Thank you all so much for your saintly patience with Q1.

I knew that, in the early part of 2025, I would be fully distracted attending to print production on Alphabet in Motion, and thus needed to make the Q1 mailing one that a printer printed/assembled. And so, I got the perfect object lined up—...

Tiny copies of "This Book is a Planetarium" coming to you…

Tiny copies of "This Book is a Planetarium" coming to you…

Hi all! Happy new year!
For the first quarterly installment of mail club (Q4 of 2024), I embarked on the ambitious project of hand-building each of you a 1/8th scale version of "This Book is a Planetarium." They are just so cute. They also test the limits of the laser cutter. And of my glue. And human eyesight. There was really no good reason to embark on a project of this degree of tedi...

August project is going out (only 1 month late…!) 😂

August project is going out (only 1 month late…!) 😂

Hi all,
At long last, the new book made it to the printer and August's project is printed, assembled, and beginning to ship out! I drew work from the book and made everyone two stationery sets. I hope they will impress your design and typography friends. The first set of cards is a psychedelic RISO print that is rooted in letterform, but also traditional Andean textile patterns...

August is late, but coming!

Hi you all! Just a reminder that August 2024 is the last month of "monthly" mail club. We are now "quarterly." Your monthly subscription charge will now be 8$ (same price per shipment. / less shipments per year)

Also: some of you know that I've been working on a pop-up letterform book for the past five years (your July mailing, in fact, was a little teaser.) The file will likely get sent...

July: Interactive RISO posters

Hi all, For July, I made 13x19" risographed (and lasercut posters) that are… sort of magic? Turn the wheel to get more animation than you might expect from a simple gesture (like a whole galaxy of animation!) This design is the letter O from my new book ("Alphabet in Motion" coming out later this yeah.)

Also- I'll post about this again, but monthly mail club was always intended to be a...

RISO animation flipbooks coming!

I’ve been wanting to make RISO-animation-something and it finally happened in June! This is an experimental flipbook that can either be flipped in sections or flipped all together at once, as its pages are cut, but the sections are perfect-bound together and share a cover. It depicts the inner-workings of an aesthetic machine—replete with gradients, stripes, and oscillating machine parts. I...

May has shipped

Design nerds, rejoice! The May edition of #monthlygoodmail has shipped (ready yourself for some reading under your favorite tree.) I had the honor of designing the cover of Ideas Magazine (published by Herman Miller), beautifully art-directed by View Post

Solution: How to Fold this Rotating Sphere

Hi all and happy Memorial Day weekend,

May's project will be shipping-out this week (a post about it is imminent!) but I wanted to post a video showing how to solve/complete the Poptical Illusion pop-up of rotating circles (from April, which hopefully everyone has received by now.)

Step 1:) Wind all of the circular rings in the same direction, as far as they will go. The rings in...

April is on its way!

Happy Spring you all. April finally shipped out yesterday. 🎉

I'm kind of astonished to say that I got to work with one of the co-founders of the Velvet Underground for this installment of mail club. (Never thought  I would say that!)

You'll be receiving the twirling, spinning pop-u...

The March Project is on its way: 🌘 Eclipse Viewer + Experiments with Light

Coming your way:

A paper viewer for the April 8th solar eclipse. And a booklet explaining how you can use it (with other paper thingamabobs embedded into the cover.)

The overarching theme is that you can use paper as an interface on light itself—to better understand how it works.

While these experiments can be conducted during non-ecliptic times as well, they are most dram...

February shipments are in the mail!

I have always wanted to make a book on transluscent vellum.  The overlapping pages create what artists in the Renaissance called 'sfumato'—an atmospheric haziness that creates the illusion of real space. And so for February, I'm sending  out a transparent copy of National Geographic that I drew. Turn the pages, and simulate a walk through the misty forests of the world.

The Project Impasse Toolkit

Ever get stuck on a project? (Or, like me, do you have 27 unfinished projects from 2023 that you need to unstick?)

My friend April Soetarman (@weirdsideprojects on IG)  and I made a toolkit for this!

You can either roll the dice (err- Oblique Strategies-esque pen) for inspiration on how to move forward. Or you can use April's ingenious and bureaucratic form to OFFICIALLY rele...

Happy 2024

Happy New Year, you all!

Hopefully by now, you've received the December mailing, which are these "Happy New Year" cards that create the illusion of sparkling, exploding fireworks. They were made with…what is apparently… the world's fastest laser cutter, as shown in the above video. [omg]

The ripple/expl...

November just shipped

November just shipped

Hi all!

November's project is a set of holiday cards. It is an example of what paper engineers call a "cobweb structure." I used a nested beehive to create a Christmas tree that rises up out of the paper with an external-tree layer, an internal tree-branch layer, and a trunk layer. You can also detach the tree from the paper and use it as an ornament. (I'm obsessed… lol)

Hi all,

Sorry for the delay. October's project is a modular furniture design kit. It comes with puzzle-like modular pieces (which can then be scaled up into the plywood furniture of your dreams.) It is so cute and ...

On the way: September! 👁️ 👁️

September's experiment is a foldable illusion wall hanging. Specifically, it is a wall hanging that winks as you walk by it (perennially approving of your outfit!)

One of the sheets will arrive folded, as a model for how to fold the others. The sheets are pre-scored and folding instructions are provided. In the spirit of offline activities, they are dispensed via a small booklet, contain...

July's shipment went out a little late

Hi all,

I've been overwhelmed by the early adopter response, which made shipping a bigger deal this month than expected. (A good problem to have. :)) Because of that, your July packages only made it into the mailbox this weekend.  Thanks for your patience and happy Summering,

Kelli
